Chapter 18

Dray

A month later

My life is in fucking hell, five months since I last saw Melissa and Mikayla, five months since I last even talked to them, and it’s fucking killing me. Melissa has me blocked from being able to call, even has me blocked on Facebook, at least the Angels have the decency to forward any pictures that Melissa sends them of Mikayla to me. I had to get shit done before I could make the move to go for her, waiting for the court shit to get over with, finish up my current open cases, and finalizing that bullshit divorce. Thankfully, I’m done, and I can finally do what I need to do. Yesterday morning, I got word that I have the job in Saint John if I can get there in two weeks.

As I finish packing my suitcases my phone starts going off. Now that I think about it, it’s been going off constantly for hours, I’ve just been too busy trying to get on the road to even pay attention to it.

“Yeah?” I answer without looking at the caller ID.

“How could you do this, you bastard?” Shayla screeches.

“For fuck sake.” I sigh. “What do you want? Speak quick before I hang up.”

“You had me arrested, my kids taken away and given to Layla. You even sold the house?”

“Damn right I did, bitch. Have fun in prison, don’t contact me again.” I hang up and toss the phone on the bed. I made sure that the money from the sale of the house was all given to Layla to help her out. Not that she needed the money, she’s rich, but it’s for Laura and Luca. She told me she would put it into a college account for them, and with the amount of money I got from the house and everything in it, minus the kid’s stuff, they could both go onto be doctors or some other expensive career choice.

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been in touch with the kids often. They still struggle with not calling me dad, and I get it, being called Uncle Dray feels wrong to me too. I promised them the minute I got back from getting my woman and kid, I will plan for them to come over for a weekend and spend it with us.

My phone goes off again as I zip my last suitcase, and I see it’s Cori calling me. Shit, probably wants to bitch me out again.

“Hey, Cori,” I answer politely.

She sniffs. “I’m sorry I didn’t let you talk the last time we spoke. I acted like a bitch.” The Angels must have told her my story.

“Nothing to apologize for, girl, you were right in your anger. I should have told Melissa about my ex.”

“This is true, but at the same time we shouldn’t have all jumped to conclusions.” This is a side of Cori I’ve never seen before, getting knocked up changed her completely. In a good way.

“I’m packing up now to go get your sister, any advice for me?”

Cori giggles.
